Going Overseas?

International mobile roaming will allow you to take your  mobile phone overseas and use it in selected countries.

Before you head off..

If you wish to roam overseas, you must first advise us at Telecom  that you are going overseas and wish to roam so the service can be activated.

Keeping your number

This is a convenient system that allows you to use the same phone number that you have in Rarotonga, while roaming overseas. So friends and family can still call or Text you, as if you were still at home.

When I’m overseas what can I do?

You can…
Make and receive voice calls
Send and Receive Text Messages

How much does Roaming cost?

Current Mobile Calling rates as of 10/11/2009

Please note that all prices are subject to change due to the exchange rates. A PDF version of this can be downloaded here

Will my mobile work?

Yes and No.
When you are roaming with your phone it may not always work with the visited  countries network, when you advise us that you want to roam, we will ask what country you are wanting to roam with and we will ask what kind of phone you have and then we be able to advise you if your phone will be able to work on the network of your destination.

Things you need to know about Roaming

It is important to know to check that your  mobile can roam when you head to your destination. Like most countries in the  Pacific Region, KokaNet uses the 900 MHz frequency band.

However some countries in Europe use the 1800 MHz band.  Most cell phones are dual band and can operate on both the 900 MHz band and the 1800 MHz band, the USA uses the 1900 MHz band, if you are travelling to the USA will need a      Tri-band cell phone.

Normally the mobile has Network select on Automatic, but sometimes the automatic feature does not work and therefore it is necessary to manually select the network you want to use.

Useful abbreviations.
3G Third Generation
CDMA Code Division Multiple Access
GSM  Global System for Mobile
HPMN  Home Public Mobile Network
SIM  Subscriber Identification Module
VPMN  Visited Public Mobile Network

Helpful Hints

The phone may not search the “network” if it is in a low signal area, please also know that instructions vary from mobile to mobile, and you should refer to the manual that came with your mobile and follow the instructions for activating a particular service.
